Competency-Based Criteria
Join us for a collaborative day of learning tailored for high school educators, focused on aligning curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the K-12 Student Reporting Policy. Explore strengths-based, competency-driven practices that promote deeper learning, increased engagement, and meaningful skill transfer. Sessions will address assessing curricular competencies, designing reliable rubrics, and creating actionable, competency-based assessments. Through discussions, activities, and team collaboration, participants will refine tools to support student-centered learning and high school success.
Guest Presenter
Tom Schimmer
Tom Schimmer is an author and a speaker with expertise in assessment, grading, leadership, and behavioural support. An educator for more than 20 years, Tom is a former district-level leader, high school principal, school administrator, and teacher. As a district-level leader, he was a member of the senior management team responsible for overseeing the efforts to support and build the instructional capacities of teachers and administrators.
Tom is a sought-after speaker who presents internationally for schools and districts.
He earned a teaching degree from Boise State University and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of British Columbia.

The Catholic Educators’ Conference (CEC) is not being held this year due to the Invictus Games displacing us from the convention centre in downtown Vancouver.

The purpose of the Catholic Educators’ Learning Days is to provide system-wide professional development focusing on classroom assessment and reporting in relation to established learning standards with teachers and students setting clear, strengths-based criteria for evaluating and communicating progress.

Registration is open only to principals, vice-principals, classroom teachers, specialists, and learning support teachers. This is not for Office Staff and Education Assistants. Office Staff and Education Assistants will continue with their regular duties and responsibilities as directed by their administrator.

No. The day is designed as a workshop. Participants will be seated at tables by grade level (elementary) or area of learning (secondary). There will be opportunities for networking and collaboration.

Everyone will gather at their respective schools. In the morning, there will be two follow-up activities led by the principal. The first activity will focus on reflecting on what they have learned, and the second will involve planning the next steps for their school community.

Yes, there will be a Years of Service recognition on Thursday, February 13 to honour the dedication and contributions of long-serving staff members. Archbishop Miller is scheduled to present to the elementary and high school recipients at their respective workshop venues. As they will not be in attendance, Office Staff and Education Assistants will receive their awards at a later date at their schools.

Yes, breakfast, lunch, and beverages will be provided during the workshops to ensure that all participants are well-nourished and can fully engage in the sessions.

Teachers should bring a notebook, pen, any relevant teaching materials, and an open mind ready to engage and learn. It's also recommended to bring a reusable water bottle and any personal items needed for comfort throughout the day.

Yes, seating will be assigned to promote networking and collaboration. Elementary participants will sit with their grade-level groups, while high school participants will be grouped by their areas of learning. Upon arrival, participants can refer to the seating charts to find their assigned tables.

The workshops—led by Katie White for elementary educators and Tom Schimmer for high school educators—are tailored for classroom teachers, principals, vice-principals, and learning support teachers who are familiar with or actively implementing the BC curriculum.
